How the gauge works

Volume against this name's own normal for the time of day, from your broker's 1-minute bars. DAY: today's volume so far against a normal day by this same minute (the median of the last 20 sessions). NOW: the last 5 minutes against normal for those 5 minutes. PM: premarket against a normal premarket, frozen at the bell. The ladder freezes DAY at 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes and 1 to 4 hours.

The scale is logarithmic: the solid line is normal (1x), 2x and 0.5x sit the same distance from it, and the dashed line is 2x (loud). The triangle beside DAY is the market (SPY; QQQ when the ticker is SPY): when the market is just as loud, it's a market-wide day, not this name's news.

Bands: under 0.7x quiet, 0.7 to 1.5x normal, 1.5 to 2x elevated, 2 to 3x loud, 3x and up extreme. From 9:35 to 11:00 ET the last line shows the median range still ahead (the rest of the day's high to low, in average daily ranges) on days this loud.

Alerts go to the Logs tab, once per name per kind per day, while this page is open: DAY at the name's level (2x for most, 2.25 to 2.75x for a few busy names) from 9:35 ET; NOW when the last 5 minutes beat the loudest 5 minutes of the last 20 sessions (and 3x or more) from 9:45 ET. They cover this ticker and every name your running strategies hold.

Volume says how far it may move, not which way. In the research behind the gauge (16 names, 2017 to 2026), loud days had more range left than normal ones, but the close followed the open's direction only about half the time, loud or not. The gauge never places, blocks or changes an order.
